Connacht tie up lock Thornbury

Connacht Rugby have announced that 24-year-old lock Gavin Thornbury has signed a two-year contract extension to take him up to the end of the 2020-21 season.


Thornbury joined the western province last season and he has already made seventeen appearances for Andy Friends side. Friend said, “Gavin is a top quality player who has really impressed me and everyone at the club. He is a big powerful player who is continuing to get better and better the more he plays. He has a really bright future and has the potential to play consistently at the highest level. He will be a vital player for us in the seasons ahead.”

 

Prior to joining Connacht, Thornbury spent six months in New Zealand where he played for club side Border on the North Island and helped them to victory in the Wanganui premier club competition. During that time, he also played for the Wanganui provincial representative team.  He has previously represented Ireland at Under 20 level.

 

Following the signing of his contract extension, Gavin Thornbury said, “I’m absolutely delighted to extend my contract with Connacht. I am part of an excellent squad that is full of ambition about where we can go and what we can achieve. I am really enjoying my time at Connacht and I look forward to many more games in the Connacht jersey.”


After a narrow defeat in their season opener, against Glasgow Warriors, Connacht have won 3 of their next 5 matches to lie fifth in Conference A of the Guinness Pro League. Next up for the Eagles is a home European Challenge Cup tie against French side Bordeaux on Saturday.

Tennis star Carr looking ahead to a big year

By Gerard Mulreaney ( @gerard_sports ) Ireland’s Simon Carr heads into the 2020 tennis season with great confidence after having what he described as ‘a breakthrough year’ in 2019. He secured his first ITF title in Tunisia in April, beating Christian Lindell of Sweden in straight sets, 6-1 6-3. Then, in July he helped Ireland to promotion into Group 3 of the Davis Cup, winning 4 out of his 5 matches.  Just before Christmas Carr (pictured above) finished of the year by reaching the semi-finals of the ITF tournament in Heraklion, Greece. The O’Brien dynasty continues as brothers link up to take the Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby

A Derby winning horse trained by an O’Brien is a very common sight over the past number of years, but in most cases it’s Aidan taking the plaudits. However, at the Curragh on Sunday it was his eldest son Joseph 25 who took the honours, as his Latrobe ridden superbly by his brother Donnacha won the Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby. In doing so, he managed to hold off all four of his father’s entries, beating Rostropovich, Saxon Warrior, Delano Roosevelt and The Pentagon, as the O’Brien clan finished 1,2,3,4,5.  Latrobe, owned by Australian property developer Lloyd Williams, broke well and settled in second just behind Rostropovich. As the field turned into the home straight Donnacha let him go, but favourite Saxon Warrior was hot on his heels.  The colt, who won his maiden at the same track only 3 week’s previously, settled down for a battle, but Saxon Warrior never got nearer than his hind quarters.
